Well Mike Martz isn't Hitler, but he was the Bears original choice for offensive coordinator and I'm ecstatic with what I'm hearing. I was a fan of the Martz hiring, believing that he was a good fit for the weapons the Bears have offensively. With the new gun slinger, two speedy receivers in Devin Hester and Johnny Knox, a rising stud in Devin Aromashodu, Matt Forte who is as versatile as any runningback in the league, and Cutler's college teammate Earl Bennett, the pieces seem to almost be in place. And considering how this offense started to click towards the end of the season, I think Martz' style should give Chicago fans the offense they thought they would get with the acquisition of Cutler.
In a Q &A on the Chicago Bears website, Martz had this to say about one of many key questions Bears fans have this offseason; what is Martz going to do with Devin Hester?
"I think he’s still the best special teams return guy in the league, period. We have to be careful about how much we ask him to do on offense. That’s really a reason the Bears have won some games is because of Devin and what he does in the return game. So we’ll be very judicious in what we ask him to do offensively. But he’ll be very involved and we’ll ask him to do some really dynamic things where we can get him isolated in [favorable] personnel match-ups."
"...to me the craziness of it would be to put him inside and if they stay in a zone or leave a linebacker on him, my goodness, we can’t get him the ball fast enough."
That's right, Devin Hester playing Az-Zahir Hakim for the Chicago Bears. Imagine Hester lining up in the slot and having a third corner, safety, or nickel back on him. Imagine him one on one with a linebacker. That is the perfect role for Hester which show cases his speed and natural ability to make game changing plays. It can be a limited role and purely situational which lets him focus on special teams once again. The rest of the receiving core already have surpassed peoples expectations, and after watching them all season, any Bears fan has to love the potential of these young men under Martz. Jay Cutler's arm can make any one of these guys a Pro Bowler but what the line being able to protect Cutler?
"Chris Williams at left tackle is worth getting excited about... I have complete confidence in that (we have the best guys in the world working with them); that the quarterback will be protected and we’ll run the ball very effectively. This line is potentially a better group than I’ve had in many years." If you say so Mike, but I will agree that I too am excited about Chris Williams and the tremendous up side he has. I'm worried though that this is new coach jargon, and that Martz is overly excited about sub par players. But hopefully Mike Tice can get the job done as the new offensive line coach. I know the season just ended this past Sunday, but we are talking Bears football here, are they ever out of the minds of their fans? I didn't think so.
Now on the defensive side of the ball, well, that's a completely different story.
