(Picture of Lovie thinking about his future coaching jobs from ESPN.com)
This game started off in an obnoxious manner. Not even two full minutes into the game, the Pack already had a check in the win column. It all started when Ryan Grant decided it was a good time to bust off a season-long 62-yard touchdown on the FIRST PLAY FROM SCRIMMAGE! He didn't even get touched. Grant finished with 137 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, leading the Packers to their second win over the Bears this season; which crushed any sort of playoff dream that the hibernating Bears had. Since the Super Bowl in 2006, the Bears have yet to make the playoffs. Brilliant
This team is now 5-8 and just lost for the seventh, yes I said seventh, time in the last nine games. Chicago is ranked as the 25th run defense, and are 21st in points allowed per game. They are ranked 24th in total offense with a minor 19.4 points per game. At least Jay Cutler is leading the league in one category: interceptions.
I am upset about how this team has played. I am pissed at how Cutler has performed. At times it looks like he is dialing it in. He looks like he doesn’t really care. Sure we need a big receiver (although Aromashodu looked pretty damn good today), but Cutler made Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal look like Pro Bowlers. Knox has looked good, and I am excited to see him progress. With Hester out of the lineup today, that missing weapon hurt the Bears offensively the entire game.
But that doesn’t excuse the offensive line play or Jay's terrible reads. Even if Cutler wasn’t playing like an arrogant ass, it still wouldn’t matter because Forte can’t run through needle holes, and the line can’t stop a blitz when Cutler has to drop back. This team is in trouble (and that’s being optimistic). They can’t get better through the draft, so they have to spend money. But Mr. Angelo doesn’t spend money very well. Cutler needs a possession receiver, and an offensive line, along with defensive backs that can shut down receivers. They need a defensive four front that puts pressure on the opposing teams quarterback. That is a whole lot to fill.
Where are the Monsters of the Midway, where is the desire to play? Where is the swag, the character, the ego, the personality? The defense used to run this team, the defense was the reason the Bears got to the Super Bowl. Now, we simply look like babies (led by Captain Cutler and his crying antics himself). I’m not yet ready to say this Cutler trade was a bust, because there is still plenty of time. What I am saying is that the Bears are in quite the dilemma come the off season with no picks, and an entire team that looks as if they need replacing. Angelo has a tough road ahead as does Lovie (if the job remains his).
