Very intriguing

What do Phil Jackson, John Calipari, and Vinny Del Negro all have in common? They won’t be the coach of the Chicago Bulls next season.

It has only been one day since Vinny packed up his giant tub of gel, Coaching for Dummies books, and Dwight K. Schrute bobble head and I’m all ready salivating over possible coaches willing to take the helms of the Chicago Bulls. Though I do think Del Negro got the rough end of the stick being Gar Forman and John Paxson’s piñata, most people knew that the former player was never going to truly work out in a city like Chicago.

Minnesota or Oklahoma City sure, but in Chicago, he never had a prayer.

But let’s break down this job vacancy a little bit. To me this is one of the most attractive head coaching job vacancies in recent memory. There have not been many opportunities for coaches to take control of a team with an All-Star point guard, a potential 15 and 10 power forward (and future All-Star), an under achieving but skilled small forward, and a shooting guard that can’t shoot (but we’re going to pretend he gets traded for some extra cash soon).

Who in their right mind wouldn’t want to coach a superstar like Derrick Rose? He plays the most difficult position in the NBA flawlessly and has taken giant steps in his first two seasons in the league. He is physically able to take any defender to the lane by beating them off the dribble. He has developed a decent 16 foot jump shot, and has the wherewithal to take over games. He is the face of the franchise, the future, and a terrific talent.

If that is not enough, how many coaches in recent memory have had the opportunity to enter a job with a team that is actually financially stable? Yeah, I couldn’t think of any either. Usually the teams looking for coaches are the ones who signed Eddy Curry to $11 million contracts.

The Bulls are one of three teams that can spend, spend, and spend some more this offseason, but they are the only team that actually is capable of attracting free agents. Cap space is just as important as the players that remain on the roster, and the Bulls shine in both of those categories.

This is a coaching vacancy that demands a winning mentality, because the Bulls are ready to win now. With two playoff series under their belts (well fought in tough matchups), the youth on the Bulls have yet to even hit their prime yet. Add in a free agent, another rookie, a couple other small free agents, and you have yourself a mixture of players that are physically and mentally ready to win and win big.

Sure the GM seems like a giant egotistical maniac. Sure the Bulls vice president seems to fit that bill as well. But come on coaches, even Bill Cowher would take this job if he were offered. It is the best job available in the NBA and will be until Cleveland and Atlanta realize their coaches are reading from the same book Vinny was reading, “Coaching in the Crunch by Doc Rivers; forward by Andy Reed”.
